Knowledge Infra to acquire 50% stake in Indonesian coalmine

Knowledge Infrastructure Systems Pvt Ltd, a privately-held coal trading company, will be acquiring 50 per cent stake in an Indonesian coalmine by December.
The company will be able to supply 9 million tonnes of coal per annum post-February 2008 and has right to mine 40 mt of coal.
The mine is located in east Kalimantan, Indonesia’s second largest province. In the same province Tata Power Company (TPC) also has major mining interest. In March, TPC had signed a $1.1-billion (Rs 4,950 crore) deal to buy 30 per cent stake in two Indonesian coalmine companies.
More projects
Knowledge Infrastructure has been in business for over five years and has a turnover of over Rs 1,000 crore. Its annual coal trading volume is 4 mt.
Talking to Business Line, Mr Rahul Bhandare, Managing Director, said that the current stake could be up scaled to 25 mt in a few years depending on market conditions. “We are not only looking at exporting coal to India but also to China, Japan and other Asian countries,” he said.
Mr Bhandare said that the company has already in place long-term coal supply contracts with Athena Power Projects for supplying 4 mt per annum of coal for its 1,200-MW project and for supply of 2 mt of coal to OPG Power Generation Pvt Ltd, Chennai. Another contract is currently under negotiations for supplying 4 mt of coal to another power plant, he said.
Mr Bhandare said that the company has also tied up with MSTC Ltd, a PSU, for developing imported coal business. Jointly, the companies are developing business models, which will involve supplying imported coal to Indian collieries, he said.

NANTONG PORT

Nantong Port
The Port of Nantong, situated on the north bank of the lower Yangtze River and close to the estuary of the Yangtze River, is one of the import and export hub ports in China. Now the port has 26 productive berths, among which 9 berths are for vessels of over 10,000 dwt. The annual throughput was 16.09 million tons in 1995.

The second -phase works in Langshan port area built during the Eighth Five-Year Plan period were completed and inspected and accepted by the State on October 28,1993, which include one bulk cargo berth for vessel of 25,000 dwt, two multi-purpose berths for vessels of 13,000 dwt, four medium sized berths as well as a large river basin along the Yangtze River. The designed annual throughput capacity of the Project is 8.40 million tons.

FANGCHENG PORT

Fangcheng  Port
The Port of Fangcheng, situated on the north bank of Beibu Bay, is the farthest hub port on the southwest coast of China. The Port now has 23 berths, among them, 8 are for vessels of 10,000 dwt and the largest berth is for vessels of 30,000 dwt. The total berth line is 2751m long. The designed annual throughput capacity was 6.31 million tons. The annual throughput capacity soon reach 8 million tons after the ongoing technical rennovation is finished. The throughput of the port was 4.63 million tons in 1995.
During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, the berth line was increased by 1265m and 13 new berths were built, out of which one berth is for vessels of 30,000 dwt and 10 berths for vessels of 1000-5000 dwt. The designed annual throughput capacity was increased by 1.9 million tons. The main structural of the quaywall is the gravity-type large diameter cylinders with reinforced concrete thin wall. There are 5 new techniques, such as long distance (340m) launch on water cushion "transportation, as well as underwater installation of sections of the cylinders, which were successfully used the time in China.

XIAMEN PORT

Xiamen Port
The Port of Xiamen is situated in the estuary of Jiulongjiang River on the south coast of Fujian Province. The port has totally 74 productive berths and eleven of them are for vessels of over 10,000 dwt. The port has 6 port areas, i.e. Heping , the first -phase of Dongdu, Haitian, Shihushan, Gaoqi and Liuwudian in Tongan. In 1995, the cargo throughput reached 13.13 million tons and the container throughput reached 310,000 TEUs. The throughput of import and export foreign trade cargo reached 7.19 million tons in 1995. During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, four deepwater berths for vessels of 10,000 dwt were built in the second-phase of Dongdu port area. The project includes one new container berths for vessels of 35,000 dwt, one coal berth for vessels of 25,000 dwt , 2 general cargo berths for vessels of 20,000 dwt and their supporting facilities. The designed annual throughput capacity was 3.5 million tons. The 3 berths on the south side, i.e. one container terminal and two general cargo berths, are built of gravity type concrete block structure with a total berthing length of 650m. The coal terminal located in Shihushan port area is built of the high-level beam-slab structure with the berthing length of 270m

SHANTOU PORT

Shantou Port
The Port of Shantou , situated on the east coast of Guangdong Province, is one of the hub ports in China. The port has now 63 productive berths for vessels of over 500 dwt, among them 6 are deepwater berths and 21 are medium-sized berths. The throughput was 10 million tons in 1995.

During the eighth Five-Year Plan period, one coal berth for vessels of 35,000 dwt, one multi-purpose berth for vessels of 20,000 dwt, one general cargo berth for vessels of 15,000 dwt, two berths for lighters of 1,000 dwt and three berths for lighters of 500 dwt were built. The annual throughput capacity was increased by 5.3 million tons, in which 4.1 million tons was coal. A guide jetty and sand barrier was also built outside the port. One oil berth for tankers up to 10,000 dwt and one general cargo berth for vessels up to 3,000 dwt were also built.
The guide jetty and sand barrier outside the port is a key project to remove the sand bars in front of the estuary, thus making it possible to dredge and maintain the entrance channel from -4.7m to -9.5m.
